Hello,
Lots going on in the Luke Forsyth art studio. I can catch you up to speed a little bit.
I was asked to design a t-shirt design for a friends band, Sun Hop Fat. An excellent Oakland Band playing psychedelic afro beat and the band happens to be comprised of many of my very good college friends. you should look them up and go to the face book. There is a picture of the tee shirt below and them some pictures of people wearing the shirts and having a really good time.

Things are gearing up for the pizza show.
We have amazing DJ Mantease set to play some music,
which will be awesome and the vibes will be super posi

Catching up !

Well first things first. It feels great to be back. Fall is falling ( which means my bday is coming up..oct 31st) and things are settling in for winter. I am trying to get out in nature more before it gets too cold, but I am determined to keep going out even when its real bad out there.

So a lot has happened. I got a new position working in a wood studio with Laurel Kurtz, who I am honored to be working with.

Laurel is currently the supervisor (interim) , so we are the ones coming up the projects and distribution. So the sky is the limit with the possibilities. I started last week and am feeling pretty good about it. I also hung a show for Amanda and Troy from the Enrichment Center where I had been working.

I also went on a short road trip to Arcata for an all day art party! Pastels on the Plaza, Arts Alive (or as dear friend Willoughby called it "FartSaliva"ha ha ) , My mom's art opening, The empire squared Invitational and Worms - a cabaret of wonder. ............wow. it was a weekend . Here are a few pictures to recapture the moments.

In closing , Things are getting pretty awesome up here for me right now. I am looking into being a member of Pony Club gallery , there is another Rob Floss video in the works, The e2 card show is coming up , also LUKE FORSYTH ARTIST rebranding and website will be coming into fruition soon! stay tuned. hearts, Luke

There has been a lot going on but there havent been too many tangible products so far but this marks a break through. I also just help hang a PROJECT GROW SHOW With Laurel Kurtz at the gallery Golden Rule on 8th and NE Burnside.

I helped hang some of the show and also painted a SNO cone machine for the opening. Here are some pictures of me painting it. But none of the actual opening.

Also I am working with a few people and have signed up for ...THE 48HR FILM FEST on August 4,5,6.
Real Excited and think that it is going to be a great experience for everyone!!

This is an upcoming event that I am participating in:

I AM AN IMPORTANT GIANT

I Am An Important Giant will be a collaborative group installation
that will open to the public on November 13th 2010 in the Saint
Claude Arts District in New Orleans. Using scale to create the effect
of importance on the viewer, the works in I Am An Important Giant will be smaller than life installations.

Organized by visual artist Natalie McLaurin the exhibition will
explore the importance of scale and the habit of equating scale with
quality in art works.A group installation piece. The basic idea is to make the viewer feel more important using scale. This past year Natalie has been working smaller because of moving, not having a studio and shipping work to out of state shows. It made her think about scale and that the importance of art is frequently equated with its scale.

She is using the Antenna Gallery
(http://www.press-street.com/antenna), in the bywater area
(http://www.scadnola.com/) of New Orleans. The show will be up from November 13 to December 5th 2010. This show is a part/satellite of
Prospect 1.5, the New Orleans art show
(http://www.prospectneworleans.org/p1_5.html). The idea is that this will become a biennial between the international biennial
(http://www.prospectneworleans.org/).

This is an old friend of mine that I met through a summer program put on by California College for the Art. I remember liking her immediately was that she had a fetish for hooded sweatshirts and had brought around thirty just for a three weeks! I like the way it turned out. I am way excited to be showing in all different kinds of spaces and shows. Here are some rough pics from the studio...More to come.

Just went to First Friday, caught a few shows at Golden Rule, Car Home, and NAUU and some dance performance in front of a promising new spot( sorry didn't catch the name.) but pretty beat from the amount of shows we checked out yesterday.

Finally, I return with something to say. I just have not been doing anything worth mentioning. ( I guess that I was in the Tender Loving Empire Rad Hatter show and I just found out that I did sell it.yeah!)
I have been busy doing different events ( pie-off, block party, last droni mitchell show (r.i.p.), as well as Travis Wiggins' going away party. As well as going to lots of good events pdx pop now, David Wein's recent art show @ the free pile, a generator show, outdoor movies and the river , ofcourse.) And I have a new house that is taking up lots of time. But now my studio at the appreciation house is up and running. Here is the latest jams.

Mid way through hanging the show I realized that I didn't have enough art to fill the space and immediately went to my "studio" and framed some pieces real quick. The frames are made out of one hundred year old wood that had been in the house across the street, but they are gutting it and building a new interior.

A WHirl wind of ACtivity

A lot has happened in a small amount of time and I am trying to make up for it by taking a bunch of pictures and posting them. I have been using the garden space as a studio and am really liking working outside. Yesterday I framed some new pieces of art that are going into the wonderful Cellar Door coffee shop and roasters. That show is going to be hung for May and is coming right along. I have to finish all the pieces this week because I am going to have to hang them the day after I get back from tour. And when I am going to be on tour I am dropping off a piece for the 5th anniversary of the Accident Gallery being open.!!! way excited. The piece is massive ( 14 by 3 ft) and will be installed on the ceiling of the gallery space. Whoa! I was thinking that I didn't really have time to make a new piece for the show but I have been working on this on for a long time ( two years ) and have shown it in several states of painted-ness. But now it is COMPLETE.

A photographer came by the other day and was putting together a book about community garden spaces and the incorporation of sculpture and other kinds of garden art. He said that its a new project, so not lots up on the site but here it is http://www.johnlabovitz.com/Enjoy.

Droni Mitchell is going on tour

This is drone zone practice from 4/14/10. We were just getting in tune with our instruments. Travis shot and posted the video but also played in it. The rest of the noise is me and Paul going bat shit. Hope you enjoy. Oh yeah about the side project with the drummer from Hella, IT WAS A JOKE. But the Times 50 best youtube videos was pretty funny and kept me entertained for some while. I am working on the garden realm hard and it has been taking up a lot of my time. But it is very rewarding work and people approach us everyday interested in the space, the project and helping out.

I have been doing some really fun stuff with the people at Project Grow. Its a community art space for adults with disabilities. I took them to see the Curious George art show and now we got inspired to do a window gallery in their window. They posted some pictures on their website. I am really excited about the project and will keep updates on its progress. I talked with Emese (who is one of the coordinators that you can talk with if you would like to get involved) and now she is pitching the plan to the board.
Like I said, very exciting stuff.

Yes, unfortunately, I had to take down the Curious George show at the Emerson space case. As I showed up a young couple was walking with their kids past the space and the wife praised the show saying "hey kids its the Curious George guy. Are you the Curious George guy" and went on to tell me that it had been one of the more exciting shows for the kids that had been in the space. when the older kid understood what was going on he asked, " but mommy why do they have to go? where are they going? why can't they stay here?" I wondered the same thing and felt very complemented. Thank you to Stephanie and Illan for hooking up the show and for April and Emily from Clean Copy for making it all possible. ( ps and Kay thanks for helping with the de-installation).

Onto the next show, I am going to be participating in the 5 year anniversary show of one of the DIY gallery spaces in Eureka, CA called Accident Gallery. I am excited to make something new and then take it down there to be installed. Its while I am on tour with the Droni Mitchell that is taking up a lot of my time and brain space. We are playing tonight in Tacoma at a house show, and tomorrow in Olympia at La Voyeur. and then Sunday night at Rotture.

We are excited to be getting on good shows and playing lots of music. I am trying to dream a sculpture/musical installation show into existence. Maybe at work sound. In the works.
It think Guantanamo Bay Watch, Eternal Tapestry, and Reporter would help launch this idea off the ground. AND pitchfork said the article will be coming out next month. Whoa!

Emerson Space Case

I am really excited to let every know that at the end of the month i will be creating an installation for the Emerson Space Case. I am going back to the paper mache works. The girl at clean copy across from PSU is going to be giving me several pounds of paper mache mix tomorrow and I am going to build some really big scultpures. These are photos of the space and the installation that will be there til the end of the month.

The installation is by Homeschool a " nomadic art shop showcasing affordable wares in all medias.When we aren't running around we live here on the internet."
the space is awesome and i am excited to build on a grand scale again.

Here are some pictures of the opening at Joe's Cellar its a bar and breakfast place that is like a sweet diner inside. The opening was really fun. Harvey that sets up the art shows and cooks really awesome food. He cooked all the food for the opening. He made chocolate fondue and potato latkes with vegetable compote. There was an awesome duo playing Johnny cash covers, an older rocker dude named Mike Wilcox with a drummer with a simple snare and high hat set up. My mom's friend Magarite Hill, who brought her two Chinese exchange student out to First Thursday for the first time. They had dinner and they invited all their friends. It was awesome to have them come and enjoy the show. Kathleen, the waitress who work there was serving everyone tea and everybody was really enjoy the casual nature of the environment. Kathleen later told me the show reminded her of day of the dead meets the Grateful Dead. She said Jerry Garcia would have liked this show. It warmed my heart. The whole show was pretty wholesome and I managed to self a few paintings too. !!

This is the one that went into the Annual Empire Squared Card show at the ever fabulous Humboldt Carpet showroom Gallery. Robert was so happy with it ( we might be doing a full show..still in developments...) and we were so happy with it. This is a photo of the piece. It is up til the end of December.

Speaking of the end of December, I have been confirmed at having a show at Joe's Cellar, a bar/breakfast place in the Scenic NW neighborhood of Portland. I am looking forward to having the opening First Thursday Jan. 6th, 2010!! ( Flyer in development...a rumor has it there may be some new Luke and Cindy Collaborations in the works for that show as well..We'll keep you posted. )

The Game

Last night I went to a super awesome exhibition by Anna Fidler. Its a funny story.

I was thinking about what to do on a Saturday night when I got a text from a friend that asked if I wanted to bar tend at an art show at up and coming art space Disjecta.
I immediately respond yes and then proceeded to ask a few friends to come meet me at the show. Well not having the important OLCC permit , I ended up being a docent. That was all fine and dandy but I realized that I was going to watch a Blazers game that night. I was disappointed because I knew that the game was early because they were playing the Charlotte Bobcats. But I knew that I was going to get into the game and then have to change gears and try to hold it together in Art gallery land. So I went home a little crestfallen and decided to at the very least check out the show that I was going to be working. I checked my email only to find:

We just played a sweet big house show in the South East of Portland as our top secret come back show. We played with my old room mates from Oakland. They are in a band called Sun Hop Fat, an Ethiopian Afrobeat psychedelic rock band and they are smoking hot. Well things have been crazy since the arctic blast 09.

I have moved to my own place
as well as my focus musically to
the newest K Sims/ Luke Forsyth project, PSYCHEDELAJAWEA.

We are gearing up for a South West tour and are self-releasing a split with Ellipse Elkshow, who will be joining us for the California leg of the tour. Enough info for now. Check that blog and keep fighting the good fight.

My Family is staying in a house in the se of portland.

we are taking turns flipping the channels.

I found this static image and was captured.

I then found David Cook, known from his dude ranch fame, at Stumptown coffee on Belmont

and was invited to participate in an art event he is putting together.

It is a family orient art show to involve and share the art that is being made by David and his group of friends to his family and community. The show takes place in Ashland, Or. For more information check out

A teaser for a full length space opera was held recently. Going under the project name of Freedom Moon Tribe, an experimental music project of mine played at the Portland Dude Ranch. I suggest you check them out herefor more information.

The Show was awesome (best yet) and the people are very fun and they had comfy couches in their backyard theater.

The film screenings are selected weekly by the members of the ranch and are mostly art films, experimental or underground cinema of one kind or another.

This Weeks screening is Pom Poko, another Miyazaki masterpiece about magic transforming racoons.

Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel. 8pm, Dude Ranch.

We are all in the PNCA and PSU Social Practice show. Cyrus put together a plein-air painting group called the Monday Painters and Sarah is decorating the bathroom in true Sarah style. The rest of the Clubhouse have paintings in the Monday Painter's portion of the show. There were some very talented artists that came out to paint with us.
Come check out the opening this Friday 6-9pm.

the Rererato art space in the NE ran by the amazing Adam and Stephanie.
The footage is going to be compiled and put onto the interweb. We brought christmas

Chaos Cafe Art Opening

I am asked to participate in this art show the day before. I stayed up very late night.
and produced the lovely piece in the middle. I am back into the painting game and loving it. The Victorian on the left is 111 Archer Avenue very happy to be included this historic landmark. I was really excited the way this wall turned out.

this is a Memorial piece for a close friend. Sibil was a very close friend of mine that used to live in Oakland with me at the alabastor mansion hotel and lounge historical society. Most Recently the Experimental Team Hope Folk Art Ensemble Experiment Has been involved
in creating a dragon. Patches, The Dragon Wagon to be exact. We build this little guy in Arcata, Ca for the 40th Kinetic Sculpture Race. We were allowed to officially join the race to circle the plaza three times participate in the Brakes/Vehicle check. The Team was thrilled. They only let one person pilot the vehicle
(no support or pitcrew.)
So here is a picture of yours truly taking off down 8th street as an officially kick off to the Race. ( we made it twelve blocks in total, all the way back to the Creamery building where patches was built.)

Tonight we will be featuring Luke Forsyth's Portland debut solo show, "Heckaville: Pictures from home." This site-specific, installation work is a loose psychological self-portrait, that he calls "a mind map giving physical streets to a dream scape shadow world." The people are friendly and accept him as one of their own. It is a beautiful city you should come enjoy it for yourself.

The show will also feature collaborations from the Experimental Team "Hope" Folk Art Ensemble Experiment of which Luke is a founding member.

It's going to be a grand time. We're pulling out all the stops!

Luke Forsyth has been creating art since he was a little kid, which he continues to do till this day. Facilitating guerilla art shows since 2003, his focus on collaborative art making and membership in several collective art groups has let Luke enjoy a certain amount of artistic acclaim. His first group effort was with Empire Squared collective of Eureka, Ca, where he helped convert a warehouse into the group's headquarters. Next was the multidisciplinary all star group called the Jets, creating several shows and mural sized works during it's short existence. Most recently Luke's focus has been pulled between The Experimental Team "Hope" Folk Art Ensemble Experiment and evilTeam. Both teams are currently producing performance, video and installation projects. You may have seen their work at the 2007 Portland Experimental Film Fest, AudioCinema Visual Collective, Grass Hut, X-mas on Tour, and Moshi Moshi, as well as a blockbuster show at Acorn Cafe.

My close friend and frequent collaborator, Lauren Kinney inspired me to start doing mail art and it has kept me quite busy ever since. I will take time to thank her for that.
I love finding things on the ground, in free boxes, or in second hand stores. These pieces of ephemera make its way into my work suggesting a narrative through loose association to the collected group importance placed on these objects. Making art from refuse puts these scraps back into importance and into a realm of elevated creation. Creating from trash is a comment on consumption problems in modern cultures and unconscious overproduction as well as waste management endlessness that has created global warming and will lead to our drowning in our own trash. Sewing onto the images is a way to mention through visual cues the ideas of domestic work ethic and the long since forgotten survival methods that once made up subsistence. The use of color is camouflage to round the edges of my true intentions with day glo, whimsicality and a witty use of text.

I make custom postcards for Birthdays, Holidays, Weddings, Funerals, Anythings.
All out of Recycled, 100% Green materials.
